Biogas is produced through the breakdown of organic matter in the absence of oxygen, in what is referred to as an anaerobic process. Waste organic products such domestic waste, food waste or cattle slurries can be broken down as part of a controlled process, with the resulting gas captured and either: (i) used to generate electricity; or (ii) upgraded to produce natural gas for heating or transport applications. Examples of this process include anaerobic digestion and the capture of methane from landfill.
